Abbey Lane Pool is an ideal venue for beginners, as it's well stocked with small fish and it is free to fish there. It is located at the back of the recycling centre in Burscough, just off the A59.

There are a few car parking spaces just past the exit to the recycling centre, and you have to walk through the bushes to get to the lake. There are a number of swims to choose from, although access to them can be tricky due to the amount of bushes and nettles that surround the lake.

There are plenty of roach, rudd and perch, as well as bigger species such as carp, tench and bream, and keepnets are permitted.

I fished here in June 09, and although I was catching all day, the biggest thing I managed to pull in were a few perch of around 6oz. Mostly it was just small rudd. I had one rod fishing maggot on the waggler, and another ledgering sweetcorn. I had nothing on the corn all day, not even a twitch.

The fella in the local tackle shop in Burscough told me that some of the bigger fish in the lake had been taken out and moved elsewhere, whilst another guy I spoke to on the bank said he'd heard virtually all the bigger fish had been taken out. I've since heard all the bigger fish were moved to Southport Leisure Lakes and that this place is due to be filled in soon as houses are being built on the land.

For now though, it's a good venue if you're taking your kids fishing, or if you're just starting out, as there are plenty of small fish in there and it's free.
